Vertigo, can a Physio treat it?

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is the type of dizziness which can make you feel as if you are spinning or unbalanced. This feeling may be continuous, or it may be brought on when you change positions. Typically, moving your head will make this dizziness worse.

What causes Vertigo?

Vertigo can have numerous causes, this may include inner ear disorders (vestibular system), viral illnesses or infections, head traumas, strokes, migraines, or other neurological conditions. However, one of the most common causes is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This happens when small particles in the inner ear are disturbed and therefore cause a spinning sensation. Activities that may bring on a dizzy spell can include lying on one ear, rolling over in bed, getting out of bed, looking up and bending over.

What are the symptoms?

  • Spinning
  • Swaying
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Falling
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain, ringing in ears or sudden hearing loss is also common.
