Hydrotherapy at Bodyfix: Therapeutic Aquatic Rehabilitation for Pain Relief, Mobility, and Strength

At Bodyfix, our hydrotherapy (or aquatic physiotherapy) services use the therapeutic properties of water to support and enhance physical rehabilitation.

Hydrotherapy offers a safe, low-impact environment, making it ideal for clients of all ages and abilities, particularly those who find land-based exercises challenging or painful. Our hydrotherapy sessions are conducted in a warm, ramp accessible pool, which promotes muscle relaxation, improves circulation, and reduces joint strain, allowing for effective and comfortable exercise.

Hydrotherapy provides a range of physical and therapeutic benefits, including:

  • Reduced Joint Pressure: The buoyancy of water supports body weight, minimising stress on joints and making movement easier and more comfortable.

  • Enhanced Muscle Strength and Flexibility: The gentle resistance of water helps build muscle strength and improve flexibility without causing strain.

  • Pain Relief: Warm water promotes circulation, reduces muscle tension, and helps alleviate chronic pain.

  • Increased Mobility and Balance: Water-based exercises improve range of motion, balance, and overall mobility, making it particularly beneficial for those with limited mobility or injury.

  • Safe Environment for Rehabilitation: Hydrotherapy offers a controlled, stable environment that reduces the risk of falls and injuries during exercise.

Hydrotherapy is beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Arthritis and Joint Pain: Gentle movement in warm water relieves pain and stiffness, enhancing flexibility.

  • Post-Surgical Recovery: Supports rehabilitation after surgeries like joint replacements, ligament repairs, and spinal surgeries once scars have healed.

  • Chronic Pain: Helps those with conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic back pain by easing pain and improving function.

  • Neurological Conditions: Beneficial for conditions like multiple sclerosis, stroke recovery, and cerebral palsy, as it improves strength, coordination, mobility of joints and balance.

  • Pregnancy: Safe, low-impact exercise option that reduces joint pressure, supports core strength, and eases discomfort.

Hydrotherapy is particularly useful for individuals who experience pain or difficulty with weight-bearing exercises on land, providing a gentle alternative that still yields significant therapeutic benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Hydrotherapy is safe and beneficial for most people, especially those with joint pain, limited mobility, or chronic conditions. Our therapists will assess each client to ensure hydrotherapy is appropriate for their condition.

Swimsuit or shirt and shorts (no denim) can be worn in the pool, towel and a bottle of water as the water is warm and we need to keep hydrated. Non-slip water shoes are optional but recommended for extra stability in the pool area.

Hydrotherapy involves structured, targeted exercises led by a qualified therapist. It’s not about swimming laps but rather performing controlled movements that promote healing, flexibility, and strength. In hydrotherapy, your head does not need to be submerged under water at any time.

No referral is needed, although referrals from healthcare providers are welcome, especially if you have a previous medical condition e.g. heart, post surgery <6 weeks.

The number of sessions varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some clients benefit from a few sessions, while others may attend regularly for ongoing support and wellness.

No problem. In hydrotherapy your head does not go under water and you can always work at a depth you can touch and feel safe. A therapist will be close by at all times.

Hydrotherapy is often used in conjunction with land-based therapy to maximise recovery. For some clients, hydrotherapy may provide a gentle alternative to land-based exercises, particularly during early recovery stages. For some individuals, hydrotherapy may not be suitable, as they require a land-based resistance program to build the strength needed for daily activities.

At Bodyfix, our hydrotherapy services are led by experienced therapists who understand and have completed additional training on how to leverage the therapeutic benefits of water for each client’s unique needs. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or seeking an effective low-impact exercise alternative, we offer both personalised and group programs to support your healing journey in a safe, professional, and encouraging environment.
