Difference Between a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) and a Pre-Employment Assessment

  • Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE): An FCE is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate an individual’s physical and functional abilities, typically following an injury or extended leave. The goal is to determine whether the person is functionally safe to perform the tasks required by their role, or whether any modifications may be needed. An FCE often includes tests for endurance, strength, range of motion, and  job-specific tasks, providing a detailed understanding of the worker's capabilities and limitations.

  • Pre-Employment Assessment: A Pre-Employment Assessment is a screening tool used before hiring to assess whether a candidate’s physical capacity aligns with the demands of the role. These assessments are typically shorter and focus on core physical requirements relevant to the position, such as strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Unlike FCEs, which address post-injury or return-to-work needs, Pre-Employment Assessments help to determine whether new hires meet the baseline physical demands of the role at the outset.

  • Purpose: An FCE is typically used for return-to-work evaluations following an injury or extended absence. While Pre-Employment Assessment is used to screen candidates prior to hiring.

  • Scope: An FCE is a more comprehensive evaluation, assessing a broad range of physical and functional abilities and often challenging a client to their functional abilities and may explore the upper range of a client's safe capacity. In contrast, a Pre-Employment Assessment focuses solely on the physical requirements relevant to the role being applied for.

  • Timing: FCE is conducted after an injury or period of absence from work. A Pre-Employment Assessment is conducted prior to the commencement of employment.

This comprehensive 4-hour assessment includes a detailed review of medical history, in-depth testing, and behavioural analysis, making it ideal for managing complex cases.

Workhab Software is used to analyse data and generate a detailed, comprehensive report at the conclusion of testing. Ongoing support and case management sessions are available to review the results in depth with the evaluating therapist and inform workplace decisions.
